Is keto safe for the heart? Yes! In fact, you’re more likely to get a heart condition if you DON’T do keto and intermittent fasting. Before cholesterol builds up in the arteries and causes a heart problem, there’s always damage to the epithelial lining inside the arteries. This is caused by high blood sugar and high insulin. Cholesterol comes in as a band-aid to repair the damage, along with calcium and fibrin. Statins are typically prescribed for high cholesterol, but they contribute to insulin resistance! As the damage worsens, the arteries become stiff, which increases blood pressure. This is often treated with a diuretic, which depletes potassium. It will be very difficult to fix the blood sugar problem without enough potassium. As you can see, this is all just a vicious cycle. Arrhythmias are a side effect of potassium deficiency and sometimes the result of a magnesium or electrolyte deficiency. If you have a heart problem, you likely have insulin resistance, which makes it difficult to absorb minerals like potassium. Healthy Keto and intermittent fasting can help restore the health of your arteries and your heart. Together, they are a very powerful tool to combat insulin resistance.
