Cutting out carbohydrates and consuming more fatty foods—like bacon—is the key to burning fat. When you consume carbs, your body produces insulin. The higher a food is on the insulin index, the more it triggers insulin. Insulin is a hormone that stops fat burning. For this reason, it is very difficult to lose weight while consuming carbohydrates. Fat does not trigger insulin. This is why you can consume bacon and lose weight. When your carbohydrate consumption is low, your body begins to burn fat as fuel instead of glucose. This is known as ketosis. Your body can turn stored fat into ketones, which give you energy. If you want to lose weight and burn fat, you have to lower your carbohydrates to below 30 grams each day. On a Healthy Keto diet, you consume a large amount of fat, moderate protein, and low carbs. You want to avoid high-carb foods, like bread, pasta, cereal, chips, crackers, pancakes, waffles, biscuits, potatoes, and rice. Instead, you want to consume plenty of vegetables and healthy fats and have moderate amounts of protein (3 to 6 oz per meal). Avoid low-fat foods—opt for full-fat dairy and protein. Every time you eat, your body produces some amount of insulin. Because of this, it’s important to limit the number of times you eat each day. Over time, frequent insulin spikes can lead to insulin resistance—which can even develop into type-2 diabetes. Intermittent fasting helps you lose weight by limiting the number of times each day that your insulin spikes. Starting intermittent fasting is easy. Simply avoid having snacks and lower the number of meals you have by skipping breakfast. Additionally, lowering cortisol—your body’s primary stress hormone—can help reduce insulin.
