Keto for women is different to what it is for men, which is why a keto diet plan for us gals has to be different too. Enter the Ketogenic diet for women! First of all, what is a ketogenic diet? A ketogenic diet is a low carb, moderate protein, high fat diet. Yup, you heard me, high fat. You get to eat lots of delicious, satisfying fats like grass-fed butter, coconut oil, mayonnaise (home-made of course), olive oil, Flying in the face of what we’ve been told for years, the truth is - the more fat the better. I’m talking chicken wings, rib eye steaks, egg yolks, bacon (streaky) oh, and more grass-fed butter. When you reduce your carbs your body goes into a state of ketosis. This is a natural state in which your body produces ketones in the liver to be used for energy (in the absence of glucose). In this metabolic state, your body essentially burns fat for fuel, rather than glucose. This means you body fat gets used for energy and it supplies a strong and steady supply of energy without all those sugar highs and lows that you get from carbs. There are many benefits that women can gain from eating a ketogenic diet (as you have seen in the video), but what I didn’t add is that ketosis improves symptoms of epilepsy, prevents and even kills cancer cells and has been used to treat and reverse Alzheimer’s symptoms. All in all, it’s great. So why am I talking about the ketogenic diet for women as opposed to a general keto way of eating for everyone? What's different about a keto diet plan for women? Well, women’s hormones are different to men’s and are far more sensitive to any perception of starvation. We also have those baby making hormones you know, and the whole monthly cycle thing. (I’m not a doctor/biologist/physiotherapist). Simply put, most women gain the best benefits from keto when they integrate regular ‘carb-ups’. This was all pretty confusing for me when I first started. I went too long on strict ketosis without a carb up and started feeling tired, and my weight loss stalled. Then I found a brilliant keto guide for women that explained the cyclical ketogenic diet for women (thank you thank you thank you!) and ever since have just been flying. Oh and the weight has been coming off nice and steady ever since. Hurrah!
